Health minister George Pamporides on Tuesday visited a group of specialist doctors from the Shriners Hospital for Children of Springfield, Massachusetts who fly to Cyprus annually to examine children with severe orthopaedic conditions.
During their stay, the doctors will examine free of charge some 500 children at the Nicosia general hospital. Appointments began on Monday and will continue until Thursday.
The group of doctors, headed by Dr David Drvaric, visits the island once a year as part of an agreement signed in 1995 between their hospital and the George and Thelma Paraskevaides Foundation. In total, around 8,000 children have benefited from this cooperation.
Teleconferences at the Foundation with the help of a local doctor are available for any children that do not have the opportunity to be examined by the visiting doctors or need a post-operative examination.
To date, around 900 children have been examined through teleconference facilities, while a large number of children travel to Springfield for surgeries. The costs of operations and treatment are covered by the Shriners Hospital.
The George and Thelma Paraskevaides Foundation, an announcement said, began its collaboration with the Shriners Hospitals in 1983, and since then children from Cyprus have benefitted from successful surgeries of the spine, extremities and for removals of giant nevi form their bodies.
