The President and First Lady, Nicos and Andri Anastasiades hosted a lunch on Monday at the presidential palace for the enclaved children and the orphans of the Helios crash, and children related to the victims of the Mari naval base blast.

Anastasiades expressed hope that the next year would bring “the peace and freedom to build a reunited state which will guarantee security and the prospect for a secure future”.

“You are the future of this place and it is our priority to build for you a country you deserve,” Anastasiades told the children. “I know that in our history we have been disappointed many times, but we must, however, change this”.

Explaining to children what a federation was, he said that it was a worldwide system which brought together separate entities and people who wanted to start a common future but who might have different origins as regards ethnicity or religion, “as is the case in our own country”.

Addressing the enclaved children, Anastasiades said the fact that they lived in Karpasia, should not mean they were deprived of same things as children in the government controlled areas enjoyed.

As regards the orphans of the 2005 Helios crash and the 2011 Mari naval explosion, he told them: “The country cares about you and wants to provide you with the best possible living and education conditions, and our goal is to provide you with everything you need to develop to the fullest extent your abilities.”
