The state health services Okypy is doing everything possible to tackle the increasing number of children in hospital during the winter period, it said on Friday.
There are five paediatric clinics across Cyprus, with more than 70 doctors, who are able to handle any cases, Okypy noted.
Winter periods are associated with a greater increase in children needing medical care, as they are more vulnerable, the state health services highlighted.
The announcement comes a day after Larnaca doctors in the paediatric department went on an impromptu two-hour strike. They said there were not enough doctors to handle the increasing number of patients and accused Okypy of not caring enough to solve the problem.
Nonetheless, Adamos Hadjipanayi, medical chief of the paediatric department and Larnaca general hospital, said all paediatric wards across Europe were overcrowded at the moment.
He called the strike unethical and unacceptable, calling on doctors to work instead of striking.
