Limassol owners and workers at private institutes offering afternoon lessons, gathered outside the town’s district administration on Thursday to protest Covid-19 restriction measures that ban afternoon classes for children.
The group, standing on Grigori Afxentiou square, opposite the district administration offices, demanded the state reconsider the “unfair and wrong decision of the health ministry”.
Participants held placards suggesting that measures to prevent the spread of Covid-19 should be implemented, but not if they deprive young people of the right to “healthy employment”.
Organisers of the demonstration told the media that it was the government’s obligation to support culture and sports. They added that their businesses were facing serious financial issues and risked closure.
The protest came after the health ministry announced additional restrictuve measures for the Limassol and Paphos districts due to the increased number of people testing positive for Covid in both areas.
Among the measures announced was the suspension of all afternoon activities for children and teenagers under 18, including sports, dancing, swimming, martial arts, theatre, among others
